Most Americans Still Want More Options to Buy a Home

Handing Over the Keys

I don’t know too many people that don’t want to own a home.  It doesn’t matter if they’re newlyweds, single people or first time home buyers of any age.  It’s just nice to know that you can put your paintings anywhere you want.  You can have a pet without having to pay an additional deposit.  It’s great to finally put your new car in a garage.  No more laundromats or coin operated machines within an apartment complex.  You don’t have to worry that the house will be sold and you’ll have to move.  Of course, there are downsides too.  When the AC quits, that repair comes out of your pocket.

Yet it also appears that hardly anyone wants to do the thing that might alleviate rental stress: build more apartments. While more apartment buildings might give renters a wider range of housing options to suit their immediate needs, Americans are largely holding out to buy homes, according to respondents in the Atlantic Media/Siemens State of the City poll.  Read More
